Film Analysis:
Princely Umanmielen enters the NFL draft as a fifth-year senior prospect who originally began his career at the University of Florida before transferring to Ole Miss for his last two seasons. Umanmielen is coming off of a 2024 season that was his most productive, posting a stat line of 10.5 sacks and 37 tackles. Princely Umanmielen projects to the next level as a 3-4 edge rusher who has all the physical traits to develop into a productive NFL pass rusher.
Umanmielen’s pass rushes usually take him around the outside arc, where he utilizes his quick first step to immediately gain great leverage for the rep. At the top of the arc, Umanmielen shows his flexibility and fluidity, as he can consistently drop his weight and hips to get under offensive tackles and turn the corner. At this point, Umanmielen demonstrates excellent body control, enabling him to effectively turn the corner and get directly to the quarterback. As a counter move, Umanmielen has the body control and quickness to consistently and effectively execute spin moves to beat offensive linemen. Umanmielen also possesses reactionary athleticism, allowing him to plant his foot in the ground, remain in pursuit of the quarterback, and apply pressure if the quarterback changes direction.
On passing downs where Umanmielen is not rushing the quarterback, he proves to be an effective curl-to-flat defender. Umanmielen can get the depth to take away the curl or quick slant and then has the athleticism to close on a flat defender in space and make the tackle.
The trait Umanmielen needs to improve the most is his strength—it shows in both his pass rushes and against the run. When rushing the quarterback, Umanmielen has to consistently win with speed around the arc and rarely executes a speed-to-power maneuver, even when it appears he has set up the offensive lineman to do so. Umanmielen often picks a side of the offensive lineman and chooses a gap instead of setting the edge.
Umanmielen is a natural athlete at the edge position. With the right development in the NFL, he will develop into a consistent and effective pass rusher for NFL franchises.
