Film Analysis:
Jalen Milroe followed highly talented and skilled first-round Alabama quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa (2020) and Bryce Young (2023). Milroe is a physically gifted quarterback in his own right, with the tools to be considered the true definition of a dual threat. Milroe has made an impact in college football, taking over and dominating games with his explosive running ability while also using his arm talent to stress defenses, forcing them to be prepared for everything.
Milroe is a vertical passer who has the elite arm strength to stretch the field, forcing the defense to cover every inch of the field. Milroe’s best operation as a passer comes when he can go through his progressions with a clean pocket, operating efficiently to get the ball out of his hands and to the receiver. Milroe shows that when he can properly identify the coverage pre-snap, he can effectively make accurate throws to all levels of the field. He has a quick release, and the ball has good velocity when it arrives at the receiver. Milroe possesses the arm strength to work all three levels of the field and deliver passes that maintain high velocity. He can execute everything from quick hitches and curls to deep comebacks and posts in the deeper portion of the field. Another important aspect of Milroe as a passer is his ability to throw accurately on the run. On bootlegs and sprint outs, Milroe appears natural, keeping his eyes down the field while on the move and making accurate passes. Milroe can also use his athleticism as a passer to evade pressure and find open receivers, creating big plays.
Analyzing the running part of Milroe’s game, there are several elements that grade out as elite for a QB. Running north and south, Milroe showcases explosiveness and burst, appearing to be one of the best athletes on the field. On designed QB runs, Milroe can make game-changing runs and dictate the game with his legs. His athleticism is best utilized on QB read-option or QB power plays. At Alabama, this aspect of his game has appeared underutilized, but in the right scheme, it could be used at a higher volume and have a great impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of an NFL offense. Lastly, Milroe can use his legs to extend passing plays by escaping the pocket and finding open receivers down the field or simply picking up positive yardage with his legs.
When critiquing and identifying areas of Milroe’s game that need improvement, they directly tie to his ability to properly diagnose defenses, both pre and post-snap. Milroe does a good job of initially identifying the defense, but defenses that roll coverage or audible late in the cadence seem to put Milroe in more complex situations. Changing coverages or sending an extra blitzer late disrupts his process, which can result in sacks, interceptions, or forced throws.
Overall, Milroe possesses all of the physical tools to play QB in the modern NFL. With the right development, he can become an impactful quarterback in the NFL.
