As the 2024 college football season approaches, several emerging stars are primed to make significant impacts and boost their 2025, 2026, or 2027 NFL Draft stock. Among them, five players stand out as prime candidates for breakout seasons. Here’s a closer look at some future stars who could turn heads and transform their respective teams.

Nico Iamaleava, QB, Tennessee Volunteers

Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava is one of the most anticipated breakout players this season. The redshirt freshman quarterback arrived in Knoxville with sky-high expectations, bolstered by his five-star status and considerable hype. After spending his first year learning behind Joe Milton III, Iamaleava is set to take over the starting role. His impressive performance in the Citrus Bowl, where he showcased his dual-threat capabilities, has only fueled the excitement.

With Tennessee’s offense known for its dynamic and high-scoring potential, Iamaleava has all the tools to replicate and perhaps even surpass the success of the 2022 season. Surrounded by talented receivers and a solid offensive line, Iamaleava could quickly establish himself as one of college football’s top quarterbacks and become a serious Heisman contender.

Jordan James, RB, Oregon Ducks

Jordan James is primed for a breakout season following a solid 2023 campaign. With Bucky Irving moving on to the NFL, James is expected to step up as the Ducks’ lead back. His performance last season was impressive, averaging more than seven yards per carry and scoring 11 touchdowns.

James’ ability to break tackles and gain significant yardage after contact highlights his potential as a game-changer for Oregon’s offense. With a likely increased workload, James has the chance to build on his previous success and become one of the most productive running backs in the nation.

Jeremiah Smith, WR, Ohio State Buckeyes

Jeremiah Smith, the freshman wide receiver for Ohio State, is another player to watch closely. Known for his remarkable combination of size, speed, and hands, Smith is set to make a name for himself in a program renowned for developing elite receivers. With the departure of Marvin Harrison Jr., Smith steps into a role with high expectations.

Though Ohio State has other talented receivers, Smith’s athleticism and playmaking ability make him a likely candidate to become a primary target. By the end of the season, Smith could very well establish himself as one of the top receivers in the country and become a key player in Ohio State’s offense.

Jackson Arnold, QB, Oklahoma Sooners

Jackson Arnold is ready to take the reins as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback in 2024. After a year of learning behind Dillon Gabriel, Arnold is set to showcase the skills that made him one of the most highly touted recruits in recent years. His brief appearances in the 2023 season, including a notable performance in the Alamo Bowl, provided a glimpse of his potential.

With Gabriel’s departure and a new offensive scheme, Arnold has the opportunity to step into a prominent role. His strong arm and dual-threat capabilities make him a dangerous playmaker, and if he can minimize turnovers, Arnold could become one of the top quarterbacks in college football and a significant draft prospect.

Noah Whittington, RB, Oregon Ducks

Another Oregon running back, Noah Whittington, is poised for a major resurgence in 2024. After a strong start to the 2023 season, Whittington’s campaign was cut short by a season-ending injury. Now recovered and ready to return to action, Whittington will compete for carries in a backfield previously occupied by Irving.

Despite not being the featured back, Whittington’s proven ability and work ethic suggest he will make a significant impact. His impressive performance in 2022, coupled with a rigorous rehab process, positions him as a potential standout. If he regains his form, Whittington could emerge as a key offensive weapon for the Ducks and potentially surpass the 1,000-yard rushing mark.

These five players each have the potential to significantly impact their teams and future NFL draft potential. Keep an eye on these emerging stars who are set to make their mark.
