Dillon Gabriel, QB, Oregon
Week 2 Stats: Passing Yards: 243 yards | Touchdowns: 2 | INTs: 0 | Completion Percentage: 85.7%
Game Analysis
The perfect phrase to apply to Dillon Gabriel’s performance was “good but there's room for improvement.” For the second consecutive week, Gabriel completed more than 80% of his passes, showing to be efficient with the football. Gabriel did a good job of working the short and intermediate portions of the field and getting the football to his playmakers in positions to make plays with the ball in their hands. The critique for Gabriel is that down the stretch he missed some crucial throws in a game that came down to the wire—and Oregon needed two special teams touchdowns to have an opportunity to win the game. Gabriel must hit those got-to-have-it throws when the receiver is open in the deeper portions of the field.
Takeaway: Dillon Gabriel has the arm talent to be a good NFL quarterback but he needs to focus on consistency with his accuracy throwing the football in the deeper portion of the field.
Current Ranking: QB9
Quinn Ewers, QB, Texas
Week 2 Stats: Passing Yards: 246 yards | Touchdowns: 3 | INTs: 0 | Completion Percentage: 66.7%
Game Analysis
Big-time players make big-time plays in big-time games. That's exactly what Quinn Ewers did against Michigan. Ewers walked into one of the most hostile venues in college football facing the reigning national champions and a defense with multiple Draft Network Top 100 players and played one of the best games of his career. Ewers appeared to be in control from the beginning of the game, making great decisions and delivering accurate passes. Ewers’ best traits are his instincts and ability to throw with anticipation, and that was on display as he was able to move the ball at will against Michigan. This was a much-needed performance not only for the Longhorns to get the respect they need as potentially the best team in college football, but for Ewers to get the respect he needs as potentially the best QB in this class.
Takeaway: Quinn Ewers made a statement against Michigan and earned the right to be atop the QB1 conversation.
Current Ranking: QB1
Drew Allar, QB, Penn State
Week 2 Stats: Passing Yards: 204 yards | Touchdowns: 2 | INTs: 1 | Completion Percentage: 65.0%
Game Analysis
The evaluation of Drew Allar continues to be a journey of highs and lows, which is exactly what happened in Week 2. Facing Bowling Green, Allar had some really good throws hitting receivers up the seam and even scoring utilizing his legs. But the other side of that was in a tight contest with the opportunity to go up two scores, Allar threw an interception in the red zone. The pick could be charted as a miscommunication, but it was definitely a ball you don't throw unless you're sure—especially considering the context of it being a close game with a chance of a loss being one of the biggest upsets in Penn State history. Overall, Allar is stringing together good performances and the litmus test is his decision-making and ability to make accurate throws when the competition and stakes get higher.
Takeaway: There are positives for Drew Allar after two weeks of football and even reason to believe that he can continually improve to remove the mistakes, giving talent evaluators even more of a reason to move him up their board.
Current Ranking: QB8
Jalen Milroe, QB, Alabama
Week 2 Stats: Passing Yards: 194 yards | Touchdowns: 2 | INTs: 0 | Completion Percentage: 61.5%
Game Analysis
If you want to win, let Jalen Milroe spin. For back-to-back years, the Crimson Tide found themselves in a close contest with USF that was within three points until the fourth quarter. Marking exactly one year on the schedule from when Milroe was benched, he and his Alabama offense struggled once again against USF—until Milroe activated his X factor, his legs. This game was similar to the LSU game from last year in that when Milroe decided to use his legs, he was able to create and make things happen offensively and start to put distance in between Alabama and their opponent. Milroe and this passing offense are still out of sync and making small mistakes that are costly. However, Milroe’s mobility helps create passing opportunities to move the ball down the field and for him to take off and run. Milroe’s consistency and accuracy will be something to watch closely as far as his development, but he is without a doubt an exciting dual-threat quarterback.
Takeaway: Jalen Milroe is the most dynamic quarterback in this draft and can win games with both his legs and his arm. The thing to continue to watch is his ability to consistently make accurate throws working the middle of the field.
