Cam Ward, QB, Miami
Week 6 Stats: Passing Yards: 437 yards | Total Touchdowns: 3 | INTs: 1 | Completion Percentage: 66.0%
Game Analysis
Whenever you lead a 20-point comeback win on the road like Cam Ward did, you deserve a spot in the QB rankings analysis section. Against Cal, Ward and his Miami offense had a slow start and made uncharacterized mistakes—Ward even broke the cardinal rule of quarterbacking by throwing backward across his body into the defense, resulting in a pick-six. But after that play, Ward played some of the best football seen of any college quarterback. Ward consistently hit seam routes, showcasing high-level ball placement. Whether he had to seemingly fit fastballs into tight windows or layer throws over defenders, Ward made every throw that needed to happen. Down the stretch, Ward also activated his legs, rushing for a TD and also scrambling to keep broken plays alive. Ward's physical tools were on full display for NFL personnel as he showed the arm strength to make opposite-hash throws but also use his legs to create. If you watch the film from about the 10-minute mark of the third quarter, it was an impressive performance.
Takeaway: The headline will be that Miami came back from a 20-point deficit, but watching the film, this may be one of Ward's most impressive performances throwing the football.
Current Ranking: QB1
Cade Klubnik, QB, Clemson
Week 6 Stats: Passing Yards: 235 yards | Rushing yards: 62 | Touchdowns: 2 | INTs: 0 | Completion Percentage: 57.6%
Game Analysis
Cade Klubnik’s first appearance on the rankings was two weeks ago and his reappearance here is much deserved. Since Week 3, there hasn't been a quarterback whose play has elevated more than Klubnik. It appears Klubnik and the coaching staff are finally on the same page with activating his physical tools and getting him comfortable by letting him run and then following it up with timely passes. Week 6 featured Klubnik going against Florida State and putting on an efficient performance. He appeared to be in control of most of the game and played with a good rhythm, balancing his opportunities of running the football but also passing. Klubnik is proving that he is truly a dual-threat quarterback, which should be embraced. Playing to this standard means that Clemson is in the College Football Playoff hunt and may be the best team in the ACC.
Takeaway: Cade Klubnik continues to rise due to him finding his own rhythm and being consistent. He is being showcased in the best ways possible which is turning out really well for the Clemson signal-caller.
Current Ranking: QB9
Conner Weigman, QB, Texas A&M
Week 6 Stats: Passing Yards: 276 yards | Touchdowns: 0 | INTs: 0 | Completion Percentage: 81.8%
Game Analysis
Conner Weigman finally gets his introduction into the QB rankings for 2024. After an offseason of excitement for what Weigman could do this year, his start to the season has been rather slow with injury and lackluster performances. But in Week 6 against Missouri, we started to see glimpses of what most of the NFL community through Weigman could be. While his finishing stat line won't wow anyone, his in-game performance was solid. In this matchup, Weigman took calculated chances with the football, showing good accuracy and ball placement to fit it in tight windows. He also moved around in the pocket, showing off his athleticism. Weigman played an efficient game with an 81.8% completion percentage, but most importantly, he looked fully healthy and comfortable. Weigman is the lead signal-caller for a team that is in the top 25 with a lot of big-time matchups coming down the stretch. Although he had a slow start, Weigman could finish strong and elevate himself inside the top 10 of the QB rankings.
Takeaway: Watching Weigman play good football was a welcomed sight and an overall positive for the QB class. If Weigman can continue to have effective performances while showing off his arm talent, there will start to be a discussion of how talented he is again.
