Film Analysis:
Keilan Robinson is an Alabama transfer who has spent the last three seasons at the University of Texas being utilized in the role of a playmaker who can produce big plays running the football and catching the ball on the perimeter.
As a runner, Robinson is patient and understands the process of letting his blocks set up before accelerating through the line of scrimmage. On outside zone runs, Robinson does a good job of stretching the run out and extending the defense laterally before finding a hole and getting into the defense. Robinson is best as a one-cut back when he can immediately get his pads north and south and get upfield. Robinson is a quick accelerator who has the speed to run past defenders and sustain and extend separation to hit the home run play.
When not receiving traditional handoffs at the running back position, Robinson is utilized in a multitude of ways and proves to be effective. Robinson will align in the slot and run orbit motion or jet sweep plays to get him to the perimeter of the defense where he can use his open-field elusiveness to make people miss and pick up yardage. Robinson often can make the first defender miss to pick up extra yardage. Robinson is also an effective back in the screen game with sure hands and the right combination of patience, vision, and open-field elusiveness to correctly execute.
Robinson’s main concern as a player is his frame and how it could limit his usage. Robinson’s lean frame limits the amount of power he can generate and he rarely pushes the pile forward with runs. He also isn't able to consistently run through contact, limiting the amount of tough yardage he's able to pick up. Robinson's effectiveness appears to be specific in how it comes via playing on the perimeter or finding one-cut opportunities to be able to use his speed.
