Don’t sleep on South Carolina tight end Trey Knox in the 2024 NFL Draft. Knox enjoyed a terrific season for the Gamecocks. Knox recorded career highs in receptions (37) and receiving yards (312) while finally getting an opportunity to play in a pass-happy offense.
Knox recently spoke exclusively with The Draft Network about his decision to enter the transfer portal, reuniting with coach Dowell Loggains, his favorite routes to run, which teams are showing interest in his services, and more.
JM: Now that you've had time to reflect, how do you look back on the decision to transfer from Arkansas to South Carolina?
Trey Knox: I think it was the best decision I could have made. I thought it was time for a change of scenery, time for a new experience. I’m glad I made the decision. I made relationships at South Carolina that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. I played with some really good players.
I also got to play again for my favorite coach that I’ll probably ever play for. That’s not a bad trade-off.
JM: And who is that?
Trey Knox: Dowell Loggains. He’s the offensive coordinator at South Carolina.
JM: He was at Arkansas with you, right?
Trey Knox: Yes sir. He was my tight ends coach at Arkansas.
JM: Xavier Legette told me the same thing. A bunch of you really love coach Loggains.Trey Knox: He’s an incredible person. He lights up a room. We played incredibly hard for him.
JM: This may merely be a coincidence since it sounds like reuniting with coach Loggain was your goal, but was staying in the SEC a priority for you when you entered the portal?
Trey Knox: Yeah actually, I definitely wanted to stay in the SEC. It’s the best conference in college football. I wanted to continue playing against the best competition the nation has to offer.
JM: You recorded career highs in receptions (37) and receiving yards this season (312). Besides the transfer, what led to the uptick in production?
Trey Knox: I would credit the offense I was in and how coach Loggains installed the system. My last couple of years at Arkansas, they didn’t really use the tight end very much in the offense. I was placed in better positions at South Carolina. I also played with some really good players like Xavier Legette and Spencer Rattler. I was just blessed to be placed in those positions.
JM: Spencer Rattler can throw the ball, huh?
Trey Knox: Yeah, he’s not too shabby (laughs).
JM: (laughs). Does Trey Knox have a favorite route to run?
Trey Knox: I would probably say a sail route or a little sailor cut where I show eyes inside and come back outside with a high angle. I’ve run that route a few times. Either that, or we had a hot route that allowed me to work over the middle. I made money on those routes. I love both of those routes. Nobody can cover me on those routes. I’m sorry, but I’m too crafty on those routes.
JM: We love the confidence. Do you have any Top 30 visits, or have you completed any virtual meetings as of late?
Trey Knox: I’ve had several virtual meetings. I’ve probably met with upwards of eight or nine teams. I recently met with the Texans and Bengals in person the day before Pro Day. I met with the Cardinals, Broncos, Vikings, and Chargers on Zoom, to name a few more.
JM: There’s a lot of interest in you and it’s easy to see why. We've appreciated your time today. What kind of impact is Trey Knox going to make at the next level?
Trey Knox: I’m going to be a smart, tough, and dependable player. I always understand my assignment on every single play. I’m a good athlete that goes out there and makes extraordinary plays in the passing game.
I can’t wait to ball out at the next level.
