Film Analysis:
Trey Moore transferred to Texas from UTSA where he had a breakout year in 2023. Moore recorded 14 sacks and became one of the best group-of-five pass rushers in the country and one of the most highly sought-after transfer players.
Moore is an athletic stand-up edge rusher who uses an explosive first step combined with overall athleticism to make game-changing plays. As an edge rusher, Moore’s athleticism also allows for him to be a position-versatile player and affect the game both dropping in coverage and playing against the run from multiple alignments.
As a pass rusher, the first noticeable trait for Moore is his first-step explosiveness. At the snap, Moore comes off the ball quickly upfield and begins to dictate the rush. Within his first two steps, Moore can determine if he wants to continue upfield to win around the arc/edge or redirect to take the inside counter track. When choosing the outside arc, Moore can work hand counters to beat offensive tackles or he can dip under and win the edge, showing good bend and fluidity to turn the corner and get the quarterback. When transitioning from an outside rush arc to an inside rush arc, Moore shows off his suddenness and ability to quickly redirect. Moore has good change of direction and can put offensive tackles in complex situations as a rusher, forcing them to adjust and readjust to his athletic ability and the different paths he can take. Moore also affects the passing game by using his athleticism to drop in coverages. Moore can cover everything from the curl to flat area to the middle of the field from a stack backer alignment.
Moore has an intriguing athletic profile because he has the opportunity to play the stack backer position on high-probability run downs and then move to the edge rusher position when it is an obvious pass-rushing down. But on first and second downs, there could be a concern about Moore's ability to hold up against the run and properly set the edge for the defense. To prevent Moore from being considered a designated pass rusher, he is going to have to prove he can be a reliable run down defender either playing the stack backer position or playing the edge position.
Overall, Moore has tremendous upside as a pure pass rusher and if placed in the right situation in the NFL, he can have an immediate impact pressuring quarterbacks.
